Abusing Prescription Drugs
What is prescription drug abuse? When a person starts consuming prescription drugs not for treatment of his aliments but to get some kicks it is called prescription drug abuse. The most abused prescription drugs are the usual painkillers, anti-anxiety medicines and the tranquilizers. Usually it starts with an overdose of the prescribed drug in an attempt to quick relief. Teenagers usually start taking slight overdose considering that prescription drugs are not as harmful as the street drugs sold illegally.
The prescription drug abuse starts unknowingly and grows as the teen discovers the kicks it provides. Prescriptins drugs being easily available have multiplied this problem by leaps and bounds. Once the intake of prescription drug becomes a habit forming addiction, the abuse has set in. The teen will try to procure the prescribed drugs using whatever source is possible which may include purchasing even over the internet through online stores which do not demand a prescription.
When a doctor stops or discontinues the prescription, the teenage will simply catch hold of another doctor to prescribe the drug to him. It may mean presenting a false case to the new doctor. The teen masters the art of lying now and tries every trick in his sleeve to get hold of the prescription drugs.
Some of the addicts get combination recipes over the internet o formulate their own concoction of powerful drug which are as effective as heroin or cocaine. The drugs which could be abused should be monitored properly for right usage and dosage when prescribed by the doctor. An open eye by the parents can prevent such abuse developing right under their nose.
Prescription drug like Ocycontin should be prescribed only when an emergency arises and even when administered, the extra supplies should be kept away from the teen to prevent him from trying an over dosage. This type of drug abuse is easy to tackle with some sort of counseling.
